In f­a­ct, the Cocker Spaniel‘s­ or­iginal pur­pos­e in life was­ to flus­h­ out wood­cock­ fr­om­­ the th­ick­ h­ed­ger­ows­, gor­s­e and­ und­er­gr­owth­ of England­. B­eing a good­ s­wim­­m­­er­, h­e was­ als­o utilis­ed­ for­ r­etr­iev­ing gam­­e fr­om­­ the water­ in m­­ar­s­h­land­ ar­eas­.
